Man Killed Trying to Help Police
Humble, Texas — A man was shot and killed attempting to help police apprehend a violent suspect on Sunday.
Humble Police were dispatched to the Deerbrook Mall to a report of a man who pulled a gun and pointed it at a female companion. Responding units encountered the suspect, who turn and fled the area.
Brian Marksberry was at the mall with his wife and saw the events unfold, then decided help police take the suspect down. Family members told KTRK Marksberry told his wife, “Somebody’s got to get this guy. Somebody’s got to get him.”
He pursued the suspect for a short time, but as he closed the distance, the suspect turned and fired his gun at Marksberry. The shots prompted officers to shoot and the suspect was struck by the gunfire.
Marksberry and the suspect were taken to Kingwood Hospital where both were pronounced dead.
Brian’s mother, Jacqueline Marksberry, told KTRK her son had a habit of helping people in need,
“I know he had a heart of gold and he helped anywhere he could but today just shouldn’t have been the day. I just miss him, and now I’m not going to get the phone call every day that I always got … My baby’s gone.” she said.
The victim’s mother went on to say her son had two young children aged 3 and 8 years old.
“He was the best father anybody could ever want,” she said. “He loved his children. He always went out, done things with them, played ball … I’m never going to see him again.”
The decision to get involved with helping police is a difficult one to make. Most police departments recommend that citizens do not step in to offer assistance in dangerous situation, but to instead let their trained officers handle the problem.
If you are the kind of person willing to put your life on the line to help someone else out, make sure you are getting the training you need for the best possible outcome.
Medical skills are one of the most important parts of trying to help someone in need. Emergencies can happen anywhere and being able to render first aid to keep someone alive until paramedics can get to them is essential, and often the best way to help.
I salute you sir, for your courage and valor?? #IGY6
