Brother Charged with Murder, Sister Claims Self-Defense

A woman is defending her brother’s actions after he shot and killed her boyfriend early Sunday morning in New Braunfels.

In an interview with Fox San Antonio, Carol Heard said she’d been fighting early that morning with her boyfriend of 6 months, 37-year-old George Gabriel Casillas. According to Carol, Casillas had been charming at the start of the relationship,

“He was funny, smart, good looking,” she said.

But then he’d become gradually more violent as the relationship progressed.

“He choked me,” said Carol. “he started hitting me.”

As the altercation continued, Carols brother, Samuel Ray Heard, arrived at the home. Carol said Casillas bolted from her room to go confront her brother while she remained where she was.

Out of Carol’s sight, she could hear her boyfriend yelling at Samuel.

“He ran out of my room, and ran towards my brother,” said Carol. “I just heard him yelling at my brother. I didn’t hear a shot at all. It was so faint.”

According to New Braunfels Police Department (NBPD), Samuel fired multiple rounds from a .22 caliber rifle, striking Casillas several times. He was transported to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

Detectives charged Samuel with murder in the shooting, but Carol says the charges against her brother aren’t right,

“He’s not a murderer,” said Carol. “It wasn’t murder. My brother doesn’t hurt anybody.”

She says responsibility for the events which transpired lie with her,

“I feel totally to blame,” said Carol. “They would have never crossed paths if it wasn’t for me.”

Samuel was booked into Comal County Jail with a bond set at $250,000
